Summer Sunrise at Buttermere

Updated: Sep 9, 2021

Another 3 am alarm signaled the start of another journey in to the Lake District.

The weather forecast was for a clear calm morning, no rain, or strong winds, so this influenced my decision to visit Buttermere in the hope of getting some good light with calm reflective waters in the lake.

I arrived at the Buttermere at 4.20 am, just before sunrise, but the sky was already quite bright by this time, and little evidence of any pastel colours in the sky. I was surprised to find that there was only one other photographer at the location.

I set up and began the waiting game as the sun rose over the eastern fells, I captured a image of Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks reflecting in the still waters surface during the Blue hour, the first i had captured.

As the light began to change and the breeze dropped I clicked away at the vista in front of me.

I took a couple of panoramic images of the view towards Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks, and one of High Crag and High Stile on the southern shore of the lake, this had the warm dawn light kissing the top edges of the fells.

What promised to be something really special was then spoiled by clouds gathering just above the horizon and blocking out the lovely warm dawn light.

I waited for another 30 minutes or so to see if there was going to be any improvement in the conditions, but the clouds were producing flat lighting conditions, so I packed up and headed home for some breakfast and to edit the images that I had captured.
