Catching a Sunrise

Updated: Feb 7, 2019

This weekend followed the same pattern as the previous ones, family commitments planned resulting in not a lot of time to fit any photography in.

I checked the local weather forecast and was quite pleased to find some decent weather was forecast and a good sunrise was on the cards.

I hastily made my plans on Friday evening, due to the short timescales it was going to be either Bassenthwaite Lake or Derwent water.

As I approached Bassenthwaite from the west, it was obvious that the weather was not playing ball, low clouds, flat light and little wind meant that it was going to be a difficult mornings work.

I decided to head direct for Derwent water, as I hoped to get some images of the snow coverd fells reflecting in the waters surface.

I struggled to find a suitable parking place in Keswick, but eventually managed to squeeze into a gap near the camping site, a brisk walk from there to Isthmus Bay where there were several photographers already in position at the jetty, the light was not great so instead of standing waiting, I headed for crow park, again there were several photographers milling around, where I noted the low water level for this time of year.

I continued on my way past the landings heading for Strandsag Bay, once I got there I was pleased to see that there were ice formations around the shore, and the light was improving. I fortunately found a composition looking across the lake to the far fells, these were reflecting in the waters surface, and I could include the ice formations as some foreground interest.

The image that I captured was OK, this being a 4 shot panorama, stitched together.

On my return journey, I managed to get another decent image from below Friars Cragg looking up Borrowdale using the sunken fence as a leading line, and another Ice formation as foreground interest.
